Watch out for Philomena she's feisty gal who could make Best Film at not only the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA), but also at Oscar. BAFTA always picks a British film to be in their Best Film Category. Philomena is not the only British Film, but Gravity is as well, and they are both nominated in the Outstanding British Film category.
BAFTA is usually a good marker for who may get snubbed, so who or what films are lost in the shuffle?
Robert Redford-All is Lost-BAFTA saw All is Lost is got a Sound nomination, that's an interesting snub, and I think people should consider replacing him with a surprise fifth nominee.
Meryl Streep-August: Osage Count-BAFTA saw this film as well, Julia Robert got a nomination, but no Meryl who has done here recently. Like with Redford it may be time to predict a surprise nominee maybe Amy Adams, or Brie Larson.
Dallas Buyers Club (missing everything)-Based on no nominations at all BAFTA may not have seen this film, but this film and its cast is strong!
Her (missing everything)-Based on the late release dates in the States Her may not have made it to the UK so it was not considered with this batch. Her lis Dallas is still a strong contender.
BAFTA nominations often look similar, but are not exactly the same to the Academy Awards, there is probably some cross over voting, but not enough. BAFTA has proven the four strongest films are 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Gravity, and Captain Phillips, that is solidified. The BAFTA director nominees match the DGA nominees from yesterday exactly. Bruce Dern is the strongest Best Actor nominee, in my opinion; he is one of the films 3 nominations today, the Academy loves the film, and a legend; he will be the veteran honored not Redford.
Today is the deadline for Oscar ballots so only time will tell who is nominated on January 16, Here is a list of the nominations for BAFTA:
