And the top nominee is not 12 Years a Slave, that was the one of the most surprising moments of today's nominations. Gravity and American Hustle both had the most with 10 nominations, Slave was not far behind with 9, but there was no score nomination for Hans Zimmer, and no Cinematography nomination, which is surprising.
American Hustle is David O. Russell's second film to score acting nominations in all four categories, and the 15th film in Oscar history. The biggest surprise was Bale's nomination, who most likely bumped Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips (6 nominations). Leondardo DiCaprio also made the Best Actor line-up.
Wolf of Wall Street sure made a big showing, much Django Unchained did last year, with nominations for Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill), and Adapted Screenplay. The film surprisingly did not get a Best Editing nomination, Thelma Schoonmaker is an Academy favorite, her snub is interesting.
Dallas Buyers Club got into the Best Editing category over Wolf, meaning boy does this film have support. Dallas got 6 nominations including the biggest surprise of all Original Screenplay, over Inside Llewyn Davis.
Inside Llewyn Davis only received two nominations for Best Cinematography, and Sound, apparently the Coens are not infallible in the eyes of the Academy. This was proof that the Guild Awards (minus SAG) had the most impact on the nominees.
BAFTA had a strong influence as well, except for their snub of Dallas Buyers Club, thats where the strength for Philomena, and Wolf came from. Overall these are solid nomination, all the Best Picture nominees are good the amazing, but who wins? Is it American Hustle, if yes what other awards does the film win? Is it the tech sensation Gravity, or is it not possible without a screenplay nomination? Or is it 12 Years a Slave who like the Globes wins out based on the sheer quality and message?
