BAFTA Film Award Predictions

Why do the winners of the British Academy of of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) matter?  The BAFTA nominees themselves proved that Philomena would make it into Best Picture over the likes of Saving Mr. Banks and Inside Llewyn Davis.  BAFTA picked Leo and Christian Bale who also made the cut at the Oscars instead of Redford and Hanks.  There is also a large British voting block in the Academy, and while these do not mirror Oscar nominations the winners at BAFTA typically mirror Oscar, unless its the person who wins because they are British, which happens at BAFTA.

BEST FILM
  • 12 Years a Slave, Anthony Katagas, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Steve McQueen
  • American Hustle, Charles Roven, Richard Suckle, Megan Ellison, Jonathan Gordon
  • Captain Phillips, Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca
  • Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón, David Heyman
  • Philomena, Stephen Frears, Gabrielle Tana, Steve Coogan, Tracey Seaward, Jeff Pope
This is a tough call, but I think Gravity will win here, it is is nominated for Outstanding British Film as well, but I think that will go to Philomena,  Both Gravity and Philomena are nominated in Best Film, Best British Film.  The last and only film in the 2000s to win both was The King's Speech, even The Queen did not have that honor.  The Queen won Best Film, and another film won Best British Film.  12 Years a Slave is the spoiler, and it has a great shot at winning, and could win.

Will Win: Gravity
Runner Up: 12 Years a Slave

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
  • Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón, David Heyman, Jonás Cuarón
  • Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Justin Chadwick, Anant Singh, David M. Thompson, William Nicholson

  • Rush, Ron Howard, Andrew Eaton, Peter Morgan
  • Saving Mr Banks, John Lee Hancock, Alison Owen, Ian Collie, Philip Steuer, Kelly Marcel, Sue Smith
  • The Selfish Giant, Clio Barnard, Tracy O’Riordan
The film that usually wins this is truly about a British experience, and that there are two films here nominated above.  Gravity will not win here, the winner here will be the beloved Philomena.
