Performer to Watch : Anna Camp

After watching Pitch Perfect for maybe the 10th time (or more) I was struck by someone other than "bigger stars" Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick, and Brittany Snow, the person who has stood out to me tonight was Anna Camp.

The first time I saw Camp was in the second season of True Blood as Sarah Newlin.  As Jason explored his hate for vampires with religious zealots he met the Newlins.  Jason wanted to do right by Steve, but the sexual tension between Ryan Kwanton (Jason) and Sarah Newlin (Camp) could be cut with a knife.  Camp was under rated performer in the show, and I am excited for her return this season, even though I think True Blood should have already ended.

Like many of the past performers to watch Camp started out in scene stealing roles in television series along with her role of True Blood, Camp had a long arc of the CBS drama The Good Wife, which helped set out the competitive nature within Alicia.  Camp was was also criminally under used in The Mindy Project this past season, how this show could not properly use her talent is beyond me, and shows the weakness within this television show.

Along with True Blood, Camp has had guest roles in the television series Glee, Mad Men, Love Bites, Vegas, and House of Lies.  Camp's first recognizable film role was a small part in The Help as one of the women was part of Hilly's circle named Jolene.  Pitch Perfect is Camp's largest film role to date, and  her vomiting scene made a mark!

Camp is going to be heavily courted for numerous television shows, watch she may be a part of the fall line up, but at the moment her main projects coming up this year are two films entitled Goodbye to All That, and Autumn Wanderer.  Camp is a performer to watch on the big and small screen, and she deserves it!

Trapped on Duty Night One: The Help

I have talked about my job several times, but there is one aspect in which I have not talked about, being on duty/on call.  Part of being a Residence Director (RD)  on call, involves being on duty for about half of the Northeastern campus, answering the duty phone for potential emergency situations, and basically staying on campus or in my apartment so I can help solve any number of problems.

Sounds awful right?   There are a couple of perks that come with this, I am able to clean my apartment (something I frequently put off), get laundry done, get work done, and most importantly watch a ton of movies, and catch up all of my television shows from the week.

Being on duty starts on Thursday around 12 noon and goes until Thursday at 12 noon the following week.  I am the lucky person who volunteered for Parents Weekend, but more importantly Halloween weekend.  I love getting to dress up for Halloween but unfortunately I have to wait until next year to celebrate, and my costume idea will still be relevant.  There would be no way I am doing a Honey Boo Boo (you still suck TLC).  So aside from missing out on Halloween my nights have been filled with lots of television and movies.

This past Thursday night was my first night on duty, and while the night was uneventful, I got to hang with my RAs and some of my residents.  It was nice to get to spend some quality time with them, most of my work day is spent doing administrative tasks, which take up too much time, and do not let me get to know my students enough.  My RAs held a floor meeting, had pizza, and ended up watching the movie The Help.

The Help was released during August last year, and was a major player at the Academy Awards with four nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Viola Davis), and two Best Supporting Actress nominees (Jessica Chastain, and winner Octavia Spencer).  The film centers around the perpetual racism in Jackson, Mississippi.  In the film several characters act pious, and use white authority to enact privilege creating a system of separate but equal.

Throughout the film one of the other central characters, Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) starts to take down the story of the help, in order to reveal the social injustice which exists specifically in Jackson, but to tell the world this is not alright.

In today's society we often let terrible folks still use their white skin to enact laws, or state hate speech which has perpetuated this problem on a different level.  People like Ann Coulter believe that the real racists are liberals, who use political correctness incorrectly most of time.  The problem with Coulter and most liberals is that people are afraid to dialogue, the conservative end up yelling while the liberal guilt has people cowering behind something.

The next problem appears to be with the politicians (mostly Republicans) who have started creating voter registration laws, to prevent fraud, which disenfranchise a large number of minorities.   The Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai stated that this voter registration law would help Romney win, and mainly because it prevents letting black voters get to the polls.  This is racist legislation, and i grateful the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled against it, but there are other states that are letting this go forward.  This proves that we are looking at race as key element, and that elements from the past have not died, this is sad, and proves that States do not always know best!

The Help Sweeps SAG and the TV Winners Almost Stay the Exact Same!

Tonight the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) held an incredibly boring ceremony.  The show started with my favorite part actor's talking about how they got their start and their SAG card, and none of the stories were neither funny nor touching (save Damien Bichir).

The first set of winners announced were for Outstanding Supporting Acting performances in a Motion Picture, the wins were the rubber stamped Christopher Plummer (Beginners) and Octavia Spencer (The Help).  Plummer was witty and charming as usual.  While Spencer's speech was heartfelt, and you could tell she was genuinely humbled by the honor; she is true actor who has graced television and film countless times, and I am happy for her.

In the TV Comedy section, the exact same winners as last year won again.  Best Comedy Ensemble was Modern Family, Best Actor was Alec Baldwin in 30 Rock and Best Actress was Betty White in Hot in Cleveland.  In the TV Drama categories Boardwalk Empire took home two trophies one for Best Drama Ensemble and one for Best Drama Actor, Steve Buscemi.  Boardwalk also won both of these awards last year.  I felt as though I were back in 2011 while watching this portion, except Alec Baldwin showed up this year.  I never thought i would say this, but i am getting tired of the same people winning at these award shows.  Do the voters even pay attention?  I also never thought I would say this, but Thank you Ryan Murphy for American Horror Story, your "creativity" brought the only fresh win for the evening in the television categories, Jessica Lange won Best Female Actor.

The end of the evening brought the most shake up in the system.  Viola Davis won Outstanding Lead Female Actor in a Motion Picture for The Help.  This makes Davis the frontrunner for the Oscar.  I should have known it was too soon to honor Clooney with a second Oscar; he lost Outstanding Lead Actor in in Motion Picture to Jean Dujardin from The Artist.  Dujardin has been a very close second for a long time, and this puts him ahead of the game, and makes the category a little more exciting.

I was happy that SAG stepped away from honoring an ensemble they thought would win Best Picture, and choose a film that had a truly amazing ensemble, The Help.  The Help went three for four tonight, besting all of the other multiple nominated films.  The Help is truly about the acting, and I am glad SAG responded.

The 84th Annual Academy Award Nominations: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, Surprising, and Seeing into the Future

Today at 8:30 am EST/5:30 PST the Academy Award nominations were announced by Academy Award nominee from last year Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) Tom Sherak the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences (AMPAS) or the Academy.

The Good

The Tree of Life and 3 nominations-Whether you love it, hate it, or well no matter what you feel, this film deserves respect.  While I myself stated it was a bit self indulgent for about 10 minutes, the film is still amazing.  Tree was largely ignored by many of the guilds, and the globes.  The only group who actually included it were the critics, way to go!  This was the best thing I saw this morning.

Hugo leading the nominations with 11-There is a lot of support for this film and it scored one more nomination than The Artist.  While I respect The Artist, I do not love it, it reminds me of The King's Speech last year (but better).  Scorsese took things in a different direction, and I am proud of his success.

Rooney Mara, Melissa McCarthy, Gary Oldman-These three names may not have been expected, sure they had some love from the Globes and SAG, but they were not locks.  Oldman did not have much of anything.  I have to say I love Mara's performance.  McCarthy is breath of fresh air, even with her leg up in the air.  These two woman could not be more different, and their performances are on completely different spectrum, but I am happy for them both.  Oldman stole Fassbender's spot, which is sad, but he is great in Tinker Tailor.

A Separation and Margin Call in the screenplay categories- The screenwriters know good work, and I glad they picked these films.  This year has not had the strongest screenplays.  The funny thing is that this year's original screenplays were much stronger than the adapted screenplays.

The Bad

No Dragon Score-The exclusion of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from Best Picture and Director does not bother me.  While the film is solid I would not place it as of the 10 best films of the year.  The film had a lot of strong technical aspects like the cinematography and editing (which it was nominated for), but the score was ignored?  Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provided one of the best scores of the year, and took home the trophy last year for The Social Network.  How did this fail?

No Swinton, or Fassbender-Swinton is amazing in We Need to Talk About Kevin, and her in over Close is something I would challenge.  While I have not seen Close's performance she looks wooden and unemotional.  Fassbender had four amazing roles this year, but his best work was in Shame.  These are two performances the Academy will be kicking themselves for not nominating in the future.

The Ugly

War Horse and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close-Proof that the new Academy Awards system is a joke!  Before I say anything I have to say I have to say these are the only two Best Picture winners I have not seen.  A friend of mine has seen both and told me War Horse is not bad, it is just one of the best films of the year, and Loud is just not good and overwrought.  I do not want to see Loud at all, I think the film looks manipulative. I am choosing the word manipulative because the film appears to try and control your emotional experience more than in any other film.   I will see these films at some point, and prove myself right.

Drive gets one nomination-Is this a joke?  The Academy has pulled some dumb things, but only giving Drive one nomination in Best Sound Editing, and even snubbing Albert Brooks for Max Von Sydow is a huge mistake.

Take Shelter gets nothing! This film was flawless and has my pick for Best Actor and Supporting Actress this year.  Michael Shannon should have received a nomination, and Jessica Chatain should have been nominated for this film instead.

The Surprising

The Help gets only 4 nominations-  I expected The Help to have 8 nominations.  The nominations I expected but it did not receive were in screenplay, song, editing, and costume design.  The Help has three acting nominations, and a nomination for Best Picture.  This proves that support of this film is waning.   The Help is tied with The Descendants, Midnight in Paris.

Damien Bichir and Max Von Sydow-Even though Bichir had a SAG nomination for Best Actor, I figured that was a fluke.  I am excited to see the film, it looked wonderful.  Von Sydow is a veteran and well respected but received no pre-cursor nominations, I was shocked to see his nomination.

Looking ahead with the nominations announced, and bypassing my own bias, what happens next?  Who wins, will there be any surprises?

Hugo and The Artist appear to have the most support.  If Martin Scorsese wins the DGA, then Hugo will be a real threat.  Hugo has the most nominations this year with 11, and statistically speaking the film with the most nominations wins Best Picture.  For example The King's Speech had the most last year, but this is not always the case.  Many films have won without this statistic like A Beautiful Mind, The Departed and even Slumdog Millionaire (in recent years).  The Artist has ten nominations, and with such strong support for two films there will bound to be smaller win totals for the actual Best Picture winner.  Right now the The Artist is out front.

In the acting categories I think Best Actor is between Clooney Dujardin and Brad Pitt is a spoiler.  The Screen Actor's Guild will clear up this race.  The unknown Bachir and Dujardin may cancel each other out.  It seems as though each of them has a decent base of support but neither of them will take down the Clooney.

I have been predicting Viola Davis to win Best Actress at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards.  The Help received the most nominations, and has a great deal of support.  Many people thought it would be a threat in the Best Picture race.  Today's nominations prove that to not be true.  Where does this leave Viola Davis.  I am putting Davis out ahead slightly; she is in a Best Picture nominee, but look for Streep to provide a lot of challenge.

Today's Best Picture nominations prove that this system is out of touch, and two weak nominees weigh down the fact that great things did happen.  I am not thrilled with this year's nominees, but here's to hoping the Academy picks wisely.

The Critics Choice Movie Awards Pick a Wide Array of Winners with The Artist and The Help standing out Slightly

Last night's award show was interesting, and we could be in for a mirror image of the entire award season, but I honestly hope not.  As far as the show goes I was entertained by the the host Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel.  Hubel ended the show with one of the funniest lines ever, the show is over now tweet how bad we did.  While I had lowered expectation for these two guys, they were pretty damn funny.  The production value on this show needs to improve if they want to be the better than the eighth biggest awards night in Hollywood.  I know critics don't make that much, but come on guys.

On to the award winners.  To be honest, I do not really respect this group, in fact I respect them less than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).  The Broadcast Film Critics unlike the HFPA release a films overall rating and in the end it ranks the films by giving them a numbered score out of 100.  Here is the overall ratings of all of the Best Picture nominees.

Tomboy - 100
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 - 93
Martha Marcy May Marlene - 92

The Descendants - 91
The Artist - 91
Drive - 91
The Ides of March - 91
The Guard - 90
Win Win - 90

Within reasonable thought there should have been no mystery about revealing the top ten nominees.  The above listed films had the highest ratings and they should have been the Best Picture nominees, and since Tomboy had the highest score, and a perfect score, shouldn't it have won Best Picture?  This is not the case.  The Broadcast Film Critics have appeared to trade in their personal rating system to become another group that rubber stamps films, performances, and other various crafts on their way to the Kodak theater for the Academy Awards.  Listed below is the actual Best Picture nominees from this group and their ratings.

The Artist-91
The Descendants-91

Drive-91
Moneyball-91
The Help - 89
Hugo - 87
Midnight in Paris - 85

War Horse-80
The Tree of Life-78
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close-66

While I disagree with the The Tree of Life's low rating, this list of nominees is baffling to me.  How did Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close get a Best Picture nomination with such a low rating?  I think the Critics expected this to still be an Oscar contender, but they gambled wrong with this film.  This list looks like the Critics trying to guess the top ten contenders for Best Picture and the major players at the Oscars this year.

With regard to the actual winners they seemed so confused by what they liked and what they did not like.  The list of winners makes it look they were taking a check mark and making sure that each Best Picture nominee received an award, except The Tree of Life.

The Artist was honored with the most prizes, Best Picture, Best Director, Costumes, and Score.  This could be how Oscar night looks, although I do not think this film will take the Best Original Score, especially with Kim Novak bringing about some controversy for the film using a piece of the score from Vertigo.  Right now this film is in the lead for Best Picture. Since this award show has been around 9 of the 16 winners have gone on to win Best Picture.  Last year's winner was The Social Network, which lost at the Oscars to The King's Speech.  Yet in 2006 this award show was one of the few to predict The Departed winning in a competitive Best Picture race.  At the moment I still think this film is vulnerable.

George Clooney won Best Actor for The Descendants, while I am not sure the Oscars will crown him a two time Academy Award winner.  I think Brad Pitt has a real shot taking the Globe and creating a two person race.  The other interesting fact is that Pitt's film Moneyball won the Adapted Screenplay award, beating The Descendants.  The Descendants losing that award proves my point that while people this this is a solid film, no one loves it enough to push it towards a lot of wins.  Clooney does have statistics in his favor, this group has picked 11 of the 16 Oscar winners in this category.  For the last 7 years they have matched up, this may be a sign Clooney may be the only win for this film.

Both Viola Davis (Lead Actress) and Octavia Spencer (Supporting Actress) won for The Help.  The cast also took home the Best Ensemble prize.  The Help did well last night, and boosted its chances to be a major contender.  I think both of these women have a strong chance of winning at the Oscars but their categories are still highly competitive. Davis and Spencer both gave great speeches that could launch them into further wins.

Davis could still face stiff competition from Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams.  Just like with Best Picture only 9 of the last 16 winners have gone on to claim the Oscar in this category.  Last year Natalie Portman won for the Black Swan and won the Oscar.  Meryl Streep has won this award twice this decade and I think either they tired of having her win, or they tried to rubber stamp her before and that back fired.  I would love to see her win her third trophy.  Which is possible.

Octavia Spencer could face competition from her co-star Jessica Chastain.  They have only helped honor 8 of the last 16 Best Supporting Actress winners.  I think if Chastain were to be nominated for a different film she would have a better chance, but I think Spencer is going to be a clear favorite this season.

Christopher Plummer may finally step up to Oscar podium this year.  Plummer has only been nominated for one Academy Award in his long career, and this was only two years ago in 2010 for The Last Station.  Plummer won last night for his role in Beginners as a man who comes out late in life, but also finds out he is dying from cancer.  Like with Spencer in Supporting Actress this group has gone fifty percent in this category, but Plummer will win the Oscar on overdue status alone.

Woody Allen paved his way to win a third Oscar in the Original Screenplay category last night for Midnight in Paris.  I just hope he shows up for future award shows, so this screenplay can be honored, sometimes voters will passover people who do not like to show up.  I am curious to see if he shows up at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

The technical categories were all over the place!  My only negative rant is that War Horse won Best Cinematography over The Tree of Life.  While I have not seen War Horse, I just can't believe it was even better than any of the other four nominees.

Overall this could be an interesting award season, or pretty boring.  I hope the Golden Globes and Screen Actor's Guild mix things up a bit so there can be some excitement come Oscar Sunday.

Things in Movies, TV, and Music I am Thankful for This Year

Movies

More films centered on women-Maybe Hollywood will realize that women centered films can be Post to both solid, and money makers.  Two films that come to mind right away are The Help, and Bridesmaids.  Both films were some of, if not the most entertaining films of this year.  Bridesmaids was hilarious, and there were very few central male characters.  The Help was heartfelt and well acted and was focused centrally on the women.Twitter

The Muppet's-I am so happy this group of puppets is back.  I am so happy Jason Segal brought Kermit, Miss. Piggy, Gonzo, Fozie, and Animal back into my life.  The movie was hilarious, and brought out some great celebrity cameos.

Marvel Comic Book Movies-They started with Thor, then there X-Men: First Class (the best) , and closed out with Captain America.  These three films took the time create wonderful stories with great action, and unlike Green Lantern or the Green Hornet they did a good balancing story with action.  The other important part was that the casting was well done, from Michael Fassbender as Magneto to Thomas Hiddleston as Loki (the only awful call was January Jones).

Ryan Gosling- This boy can act!  I have seen quality work from him in the past in Blue Valentine, Half Nelson, and Lars and the Real Girl, but he had three amazing performances this year alone.  Gosling started with the summer film Crazy Stupid Love, where he was both sexy and hilarious.  Then Gosling had his starring role in Drive where he played the sulky stuntman/criminal.  He closed out the year with his best performance in The Ides of March where he started out an ambitious aid to a politician and ended up a bitter sullen victim of the game of politics.

Some great Original Screenplays- Midnight in Paris was romantic hilarious and beautifully written.  The Tree of of Life is ambitious and a revelation.  Martha Marcy May Marlene is dark and thrilling.  Margin Call is one of the most interesting looks at current financial situation.  Taking Shelter is a great look mental illness and how fear of losing things shapes our reality.  Even Bridesmaids (with its flaws) is a hilarious piece of work.  There are still so many great ones to come!Th

TV

AMC- The Network is amazing!  They are currently airing The Walking Dead, which is having a great second season.  The first season of The Killing was addicting.  The fourth season of Break Bad continues the show's pattern of only getting better.  Mad Men will be returning in the new year.  What more could anyone want? This network is great!

Emily Van Camp-I love good soapy drama and she is currently the the headline of one of my biggest addictions this year, Revenge.

The Ensembles from Community and The Good Wife

Community has found their groove again, and NBC is shelving them for a short time?  This show has done such an amazing job evolving and continuing to be funny, and I could watch it over and over again.

The Good Wife's ensemble (including its guest stars) work impeccably together.  The cast is lead by Marguilles but this is not a one woman show.  The directors know how to intertwine stories and bring characters together.

Louis CK and Larry David-I am thankful for bitter sarcastic, dark humor!  Louis CK and Larry David have provided that for me this year.  Louis is a much darker version of Seinfeld, and his humor is so on point.  Meanwhile Curb Your Enthusiasm only has gotten better with Larry moving to New York City.

Music

4-I am thankful Beyonce has decided to to follow her heart, and work on music she wanted to make because it has paid off.  With great songs like "I Care" "I was Here" and her bigger hits "Run the World (Girls)" "The Best I've Never Had" and "Countdown" Beyonce should be proud.

Adele-Her voice is flawless and she can actually sing.  I have always loved this women, and new found popularity is great.  This Best New Artist Grammy winner is one of the best singers I have ever heard!

David Guetta-His DJ'ing and new CD is one of my favorite of the year.  This music is my gym mix and all of these songs are what make me want to just get out there and dance
