The Young and the Restless Dominates the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations

Good Morning America's Sam Champion took charge announcing the 40th Annual Daytime Emmy nominations this morning around 9 am (EST).  Champion was a natural, and hilarious proving this shows dominance within the morning show realm, and helping GMA grab a bunch of Emmy nominations this morning as well.

Today's nominations were interesting all five eligible dramas received a nomination, including the returning One Life to Live.  Most of the acting categories only had four nominees, and most of the nominees in those categories came from The Young and the Restless.  An interesting twist since most prognosticators thought General Hospital would dominate. Y&R had 11 of the 25 acting nominations, almost half!

The best news on the acting front is that after 26 years on The Bold and the Beautiful Katherine Kelly Lang finally received an acting nomination for playing Brooke Logan.  Props to Robin Roberts for knowing the history of Lang being snubbed.  Another actress who is often snubbed finally received a nomination, Kristen Alderson, but for General Hospital.  Alderson has played Starr Maning for 15 years (since she was 7).

The weirdest category anomaly is the Outstanding Talk Show Categories and Outstanding Talk Show Host, only one line up Dr. Oz.  I am not sure if people did not submit themselves, but no pair, or series of hosts was nominated, and Katie Couric missed out on a nomination as well.

Daytime Emmy Predictions

Yep, with only four shows on traditional networks now (One Life to Live is still eligible) the Daytime Emmy nominations are happening tomorrow, here is how I think they will go:

Best Drama
The Bold and the Beautiful
General Hospital
The Young and the Restless

Tough call, B&B was snubbed last year after a series of wins.  This year they said goodbye to Stephanie, which created some good television.  General Hospital has the most wins (ever) it will score a nomination.  The third and last spot is between Y&R, OLTL, and DOOL.  I personally think DOOL gets in, they had their second nomination after many years of never being nominated.  Yet DOOL had some creative bumps in the road.  OLTL has been off the air for a while, but is back (may be off people's mind too much.  I think the safe bet is another perenial favorite over Y&R.

Best Actor in a Drama
Peter Bergman-The Young and the Restless
Maurice Bernard-General Hospital
Doug Davidson-The Young and the Restless
John McCook-The Bold and the Beautiful
Jason Thompson-General Hospital

I think four of these men are locks, Bergman's spot is the wild card, which could go to Howarth for GH, or another younger Y&R guy Michael Muhney, but I think Bergman is a safe bet.

Best Actress in a Drama
Susan Flannery-The Bold and the Beautiful
Finoula Hughes-General Hospital
Peggy McCay-Days of Our Lives
Heather Tom-The Bold and the Beautiful
Laura Wright-General Hospital

The only limb I am going out on is for McCay, her story was incredible, and she has never been nominated, and I think this is something voters go for, and I would like to see her on this list.  Jeanne Cooper being sick could help with a sentimental vote.  I think she is the spoiler

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama
Bradford Anderson-General Hospital
Scott Clifton-The Bold and the Beautiful
Billy Miller-The Young and the Restless
James Reynolds-Days of Our Lives
Greg Rikaart-The Young and the Restless

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama
Julie Marie Berman-General Hospital
Melissa Claire Egan-The Young and the Restless
Nancy Lee Grahn-General Hospital
Rebecca Herbst-General Hospital
Katherine Kelly Lange-The Bold and the Beautiful

Best Younger Actor in a Drama Series
Chad Duell-General Hospital
Max Ehrich-The Young and the Restless
Bryton James-The Young and the Restless
Chandler Massey-Days of Our Lives

Best Younger Actress in a Drama Series
Kristin Alderson-General Hospital
Kim Matula-The Bold and the Beautiful
Haley Pullos-General Hospital
Jacqueline Macinnes Wood-The Bold and the Beautiful

Best Directing
The Bold and the Beautiful
Days of Our Lives
General Hospital

Daytime Dramas Continue to Lose Steam with the Loss of a Grand Dame

Susan Flannery Picture
After 25 years The Bold and the Beautiful's Susan Flannery will bow out as the matriarch or the Forrester clan.  Show runner Bill Bell will have Flannery on a limited contract to wrap things up, but as soon as her story ends she will leave the runway.  This comes right on the heals of Ron Moss who plays her son Ridge Forrester in the show announcing he was leaving the show over money.  Flannery and Moss were two of the original four characters still remaining on the show, leaving Katherine Kelly Lange (Brooke Forrester), and John McCook (Eric Forrester).  Lange has signed a recent deal.  Moss leaving the show is not a major loss, in fact I am excited for a potential recast, but Flannery leaving is another sad sign that the Daytime Drama or Soap Opera.

Flannery has been a staple in the Daytime community for an incredibly long time; she started out on Days of Our Lives as Dr. Laura Spencer Horton from 1966 through 1975; she also won the first Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Daytime Drama for her last year on the show. Flannery's most memorable role has been as Stephanie Forrester in The Bold and the Beautiful.  Susan Flannery originated the role in 1987 and has received 8 nominations for this role from 2000-2011, and won the award three time in 2000, 2002, and 2003.

Susan Flannery is one of the only grand dames of Daytime still on the air, and her departure from B&B will be a massive loss for the industry.  From her famous fights with Brooke, to her loving protection of her family, Stephanie Forrester is force to be reckoned with, and will be missed on Daytime.

Few women like her on the air still, and many relegated to a supporting status.  Stars like Jeanne Cooper, Deidre Hall, and arguably Melody Thomas Scott are just a a few left today.  Although Hall and Scott bounce on and off their programs.  Even Cooper has taken time away for health reasons.  Soap Opera's are continually dying, and losing Susan Flannery from B&B, is another nail in the proverbial coffin.
